| Letter from Stephanie Odegard - April 2008 | |
|
Every
day, think as you wake up, today I am fortunate to have woken up, I am
alive, I have a precious human life, I am not going to waste it, I am
going to use all my energies to develop myself, to expand my heart out
to others, to achieve enlightenment for the benefit of all beings…I
am going to benefit others as much as I can.
H.H. the XIV Dalai Lama Everything would be a lot different if that were always among our first thoughts every morning. Given the conditions today in many parts of the world, it is tempting to turn away and to shield oneself from the reality…the turmoil, the terrorism, the extreme poverty and abuse of basic human rights that has led to this most disturbing state of affairs. During my travels, while visiting places where our work is done, conditions in many cases are harsh. Looking at everything with my eyes wide open is difficult to bear. Sometimes I think it would be easier to go someplace else and do something different, and not to look at it at all. But there is another way of viewing this condition and a far better way of dealing with these issues than to turn a blind eye. We can encourage, and embrace any opportunity to better understand our place and purpose in the global existence, and to affect change, however slight. There are opportunities and ways for us to do this, to benefit others as much as we can. One is through the work that we do. Mine, is to bring you - an appreciative, sophisticated, enlightened audience - a beautiful handmade product from a place and a people who greatly benefit from being able to participate in its production. Another way is through one’s knowledgeable and educated purchase, in consciously choosing products made in a responsible, sustainable manner, and in conditions where human rights are respected, where people are paid fairly, and where standards of living are being improved through fair labor practices. We are working through a lot of tough issues surrounding our production in many places and it is not the time to abandon them. Now, more than ever, to continue engaging through improving the lives of our producers through the process can make a difference and we can all have a hand in that. Stephanie Odegard |

MELISSA BRADDOCK Melissa Braddock, a visual artist, continues this tradition with her latest series “afternoons holding company with the boys” Originally from Tennessee she currently lives in Miami Beach, Florida. Melissa’s work is abstract expressionism. Each painting evolves as a work of art during the painting process. PHILIPPE CROQ After a cancer diagnosis Philippe Croq radically changed his life by leaving the aerospace sector where he worked and dedicated himself to painting. His “second life” has been accompanied by international recognition of his paintings, and awards in several exhibitions: XVII the Biennial of Umam in Nize, Henri Matisse award, “d'or Toison” of “Artjonction” and the first prize at the “Mossa”. | Winners Announced in The Odegard Award For Excellence In Rug Design Competition | |

New
York, NY June 29, 2007 The top three winners were announced last evening at The Odegard Award for Excellence in Rug Design Awards Ceremony. Industry luminaries Dr. Barbara Bloemink, Sherri Donghia, Matilda McQuaid, Jack Lenor Larsen, and Stephanie Odegard juried over 930 student submissions and were on hand to present the awards. The competition was created to show student designers how combining modern designs with traditional hand knotting techniques can increase awareness and respect for the legacy of textile and carpet weaving.
The Gold prizewinner Laura Valentine of Virginia Tech receives a 6 x 9 carpet produced by Odegard from her design, a $2,500 cash prize, and will be offered a three month paid internship at one of Odegard’s US showrooms. The winning design will also be offered for sale in all Odegard showrooms, with the winner receiving a royalty on the sales of her design. The Silver and a $2,000 cash prize went to Jason Neufeld of the Pratt Institute. The Bronze was presented to Beth Taylor of the University of Texas, School of Architecture who received a $1,500 cash prize. All three students were awarded complimentary roundtrip airfare and two nights at the Waldorf Astoria to attend the awards ceremony last evening at the New York School of Interior Design. Also in attendance was Prof. Gina Tanner of the Miami Art Institute. Addressed exclusively to students in the field of the arts, Odegard invited design students from over 400 U.S. colleges and universities to submit original carpet designs and received 930 submissions from 37 states, plus Canada, Cyprus, Greece, India and Turkey. Applicants were encouraged to offer designs with inspiration reflecting the spirit of Odegard’s mission by combining a modern esthetic with traditional weaving methods. The entries were judged on the merits of artistic execution and the originality of their design vision combined with the use of natural materials. Odegard hopes the competition will launch careers and help aspiring designers bridge the gap between academia and a professional life in the design world.
Following the work Stephanie Odegard has been personally involved in for over two decades; she believes this competition will demonstrate for a new generation of designers that it is possible to create luxury design through traditional industries while sustaining the artisans and local communities responsible for their production. |

| Odegard Donates Rugs for Lobby of Museum of Arts & Design | |
![]() |
New York, NY – April 1, 2005 – When Steve Wanta was given the architectural challenge of a re-design of the lobby of the Museum of Arts & Design the first person he told was Stephanie Odegard. Having worked with Stephanie Odegard on many projects over the past decade including the design of several of Odegard’s showrooms, Stephen Wanta, “knew Odegard would be a great match with the Museum and its mission to work with hand crafted pieces of art from around the globe”. Although faced with several obstacles including only two weeks to complete the project, Stephanie agreed to design a custom wall-to-wall floor covering for the Museum of Arts & Design. Working with existing pieces from Odegard’s hearty Chickpo Collection, she formed an open spacious patchwork of rich saturated color to cover the entire lobby and store totaling over 1,400 square feet. This created a handmade artful floor designed in keeping with the spirit of the Museum of Art and Design. “Given the institution, which has recently re-opened with an exciting new store design and new name, I was challenged and excited by the prospect of creating a floor with such great visibility to show visitors how appropriate hand made carpets are even for highly trafficked commercial areas,” said Stephanie Odegard. “We are delighted to celebrate the hand-made with great design in our new lobby and store, perfectly exemplified by Odegard carpets,” says Holly Hotchner, director of the Museum of Arts & Design. “These beautiful, hand-knotted creations underscore our passionate commitment to the finest in materials and craftsmanship.” Architect Stephen Wanta’s artful and elegant redesign of the Museum’s lobby and admissions spaces, as well as The Store was unveiled in early winter. Visitors now enter a much more welcoming lobby, featuring Odegard’s patchwork floor design as well as a 200-foot-long banner of Jack Lenor Larsen-designed fabric donated by Cowtan & Tout. A striking model of the Museum’s new home at Two Columbus Circle is also on prominent display. |
